A nuclear reactor is a device in which a nuclear fission chain reaction ‎occurs under controlled conditions, it is composed of a combination‎ of ‎fissile, fissionable, and other materials in sufficient quantity and ‎suitable arrangement. ‎

Reactors are designed mainly to be used for the purpose of:

Control Room of a Nuclear Power Reactor

Control Room of a Nuclear Research Reactor
  • Generating heat which can be used to generate electricity, or propel ‎ships and submarines
  • Creating fissile material like plutonium-239 which can be used as nuclear fuel
  • Creating radioisotopes for experimental, medical or other purposes
  • Generating neutrons for experimental and testing purposes
As of December 2010 there are more than 857 reactors operating worldwide:
  • ‎‎441 nuclear power reactors in operation‎ in 29 countries
  • 236 nuclear ‎research reactors‎ in operation‎ in 56 countries
  • 180 small nuclear ‎reactors powering 140 ships and
  • submarines
  • ‎65 nuclear power ‎reactors under construction  in 15 countries
  • 3 nuclear research ‎and test reactors‎ under construction in 3 countries.
